AN COSÁN DRAÍOCHTA

New music commission in tribute to Johnny Connolly

Stiúideo Cuan are delighted to announce that An Cosán Draíochta – a new music commission by Johnny Óg Connolly in memory of his late father, renowned melodeon player Johnny Connolly, will be on nationwide tour this Autumn.

Johnny Connolly; Johnny na gConnollys; Johnny Phádraic Phíotair; Johnny Phádraig Phíotair Thomáis Mhichil Thaidhg; Johnny Inis Bearachain; Sean-Johnny; King of the Melodeon – he had many names, but they all brought the same man to mind – a gentle, kind, warm-hearted musical genius that filled every room he was in with joy and rhythm that lifted spirits and inspired sean-nós dancers across the globe.

Johnny Connolly was laid to rest on New Year’s Eve 2019. As the community of Cois Fharraige in Connemara and the wider traditional music family laid one of their heroes to rest, little did anyone know that the entire world of live music would soon be silenced completely with the onslaught of Covid-19.

During the ensuing lockdown, Stiúideo Cuan commissioned composer and musician Johnny Óg Connolly to compose a suite in memory and celebration of his late father. We are delighted to announce that this new work, An Cosán Draíochta, will be performed in the Solstice Arts Centre on Friday 11 November 2022.

An Cosán Draíochta was the name given by the inhabitants of Inis Bearachain to the path, which emerged to the mainland during the ebb tide. A liminal space, An Cosán Draíochta was arterial in the life and psyche of the islanders – as was their music.

This high-end work will feature solo and ensemble elements, seamlessly weaving music and the oral art forms of song & poetry. The A-list performers include Ciara Ní Bhriain (fiddle/viola), Clíodhna Ní Choisdealbha (banjo, tenor guitar & Greek bouzouki), Jim Higgins (piano & percussion), Pádraig Ó Dubhgaill (guitar), Johnny Óg Connolly (accordion & melodeon) & Seosamh Ó Neachtain (dancer).

An Cosán Draíochta is produced by multi-award-winning writer and director Darach Mac Con Iomaire, Creative Director of Stiúideo Cuan.

Saothar Nua Ceoil i gcuimhne ar Johnny Connolly

Tá ríméad ar Stiúideo Cuan a fhógairt go mbeidh An Cosán Draíochta, saothar úrnua leis an gceoltóir agus cumadóir iomráiteach Johnny Óg Connolly, in ómós dá athair, Johnny Pháraic Phíotair, ag dul ar chamchuairt náisiúnta an Fómhar seo.

Johnny Connolly; Johnny na gConnollys; Johnny Phádraic Phíotair; Johnny Phádraig Phíotair Thomáis Mhichil Thaidhg; Johnny Inis Bearachain; Sean-Johnny; Rí an Mhileoidean – is cuma cén t-ainm a luaitear leis, is é an duine céanna a thagann chun cuimhne – fear uasal, ceolmhar, gealgháireach, spraíúil a chuir spiorad agus anam sa cheol a sheinn sé, a lonraigh an seomra lena mheangadh gáire, agus a chuir rithim sheasta ar fáil do dhamhsóirí ar an sean-nós ar fud an domhain.

Cuireadh Johnny Connolly i gCré na Cille Oíche Chinn Bhliana 2019. Cuireadh é nuair nach raibh trácht ar an gCoróinvíreas. Agus muintir Chois Fharraige agus pobal an cheoil thraidisiúnta ag fágáil slán lena gcara dílis, ní fhéadfadh duine ar bith a shamhlú go mbeadh an domhan ina chíor thuathail cúpla mí níos déanaí agus nach gcloisfí ceol beo go ceann i bhfad arís…

Le linn na tréimhse dianghlasála, bhronn Stiúideo Cuan coimisiún ar an mboscadóir clúiteach, Johnny Óg Connolly, chun saothar nua ceoil a chumadh in ómós agus i gcuimhne a Dheaide. Tá ríméad orainn go mbeidh an saothar nua seo á léiriú sa Solstice Arts Centre ar an Aoine 11 Samhain 2022.

Ceol nua ar fad a bheas anseo, curtha i láthair ag scoth na gceoltóirí, ina measc: Clíodhna Ní Choisdealbha (banjó), Ciara Ní Bhriain (fidil), Pádraig Ó Dubhghaill (giotár), Jim Higgins (cnaguirlisí & Pianó), Johnny Óg Connolly (bosca), Seosamh Ó Neachtain (damhnsa) agus an t-amhránaí cumasach Bríd Treasa Ní Ghaoithín.

Beidh An Cosán Draíochta á léiriú ag Darach Mac Con Iomaire, stiúrthóir cruthaitheach Stiúideo Cuan, a bhfuil aitheantas náisiúnta agus idirnáisiúnta bainte amach aige as ucht caighdeán agus cruthaitheacht a chuid oibre.

Agus muid go léir fágtha d’uireasa an cheoil bheo le fada, is deis iontach é seo don phobal áitiúil agus náisiúnta, spiorad a athmhúscailt, ardú croí a fháil, agus bheith faoi gheasa ag ceol nua an Chosáin Draíochta, in amharclann den scoth – An Theatre Royal i bPort Láirge.
